| Vietnam Tours | |||||
|
At Griswald's, we're regularly updating our travel and tour options & are always looking for ways to make our tour programs even better. Below you’ll see an example of our Grand Tour from Ha Noi to HCM City. It’s easy with us,
just let us know what you'd like to do,
how long you want to do it for,
some
ideas of your interests & we’ll then be able to
help tailor make an itinerary to suit you. Our trip to the Elephant Village (where you really do get up close & personal with an elephant) at Ban Don Village in the Buon Me Thuot area offers something really a bit special. You don't just get to see the elephants but you can feed them, talk to them (don't laugh they like it), wash them (& they just love that) find out a great deal about them from the ethnic groups who for centuries have been living so very closely with them. It's been so popular that we're now doing a similar thing in Da Lat which is a lovely mountain resort area & not too far from HCM City. All prices for our tours are available upon application, & it depends on where you wish to visit, how long you have in Vietnam and of course, how many people are going. If you'd like to know more about our tour departure dates, well that's easy - we don't really have any ! Griswald's tours leave when you want & not the other way around. It makes a nice change we think !!! |
| Our Other Tours Include: | |
|
Ha Noi - Sa Pa - Ha Noi: 5 days - 4 nights. Ha Noi - Ha Long & Cat Ba Ha Noi: 3 days - 2 nights. Ha Noi - Hue - Hoi An - Ho Chi Minh City: 10 days - 9 nights. Ha Noi – Hue – Hoi An – Da Nang: 10 days – 9 nights |

Griswald's 22 Day Grand Tour of Viet Nam |
|
Please note: Our 22 Day Grand Tour is definitely our most popular but the details of it are rarely quite the same for everyone. Usually our guests make various changes to suit themselves, add more or less days, start from either end, sometimes finish in the middle & it's always fine with us. Normally this is the itinerary that we send to you to give you some ideas of what's possible, then it goes back & forth between us & you until it becomes the tour YOU want to do & we're very happy to assist you with that. Please Also note: When we give you our price on a tour it will be basically a private tour for you & your partner, family or group & that what's included in the price of the tour will be carefully laid out for you at the start. There'll be none of this dodgy, extra "in country" payments to make, no compulsory (& these days its every day) guide & driver tips to be dolled out & no other shonky excuses to raise the price of your tour once we've got your interest. Straight talking is the least we can do for you, we reckon. |
| Day 1 | Arrive in Ha Noi |
| We’ll meet your flight at Noi Bai airport in Ha Noi -
flight details to be advised. Before heading into town, you can change your dollars into dong at
1 of a number currency exchange bureaus
the airport. Afterwards, we’ll transfer you to your
hotel. You’ll have some free time for a little rest after your flight then make your way over to the famous REAL Kangaroo Café (we like to think it is anyway). Your guide will be able to show you how to get there or you can get your hotel to call a taxi for you. At the café, we can spend some time going through any questions you may have about your itinerary. From the café, you’ll have time to wander through the old quarter on your way back to your hotel. This will give you an opportunity to visit the famous Ngoc Son Temple which is just down the street from our café on Hoan Kiem lake (the lake of the returned sword). You’ll be our guests for dinner either before or after (depending on ticket availability) the famous Water Puppets show at Hoan Kiem lake. (O/night in Ha Noi) |
|
| Day 2 | Day tour of Ha Noi & the night Train to Lao Cai |
|
You’ll need to have had brekkie & be ready to leave your hotel at approx 8.30 AM for your tour today.
You’ll see all the spots beginning with the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum (to see Uncle Ho), the One Pillar
Pagoda, the Ho Chi Minh museum, the Army museum and then the Temple of Literature. After lunch,
you’ll go to the Ha Noi Hilton (Hoa Lo prison museum), the Women’s museum, the Opera House and finish
up with a quiet drink to finish off the day in style. You’ll probably be a bit tired at the end of the day, but you’ll be able to sleep well on the train to Lao Cai. You’ll board the train at approx 9.30 PM in Ha Noi. (O/night on the train) Note: We’d like to remind all our Griswald's’ clients that for your trip to Sa Pa you need to be ready to depart by 8.00 PM. We’re happy to pick you up from your hotel or you can meet us at the Kangaroo Café. Please discuss your preference with your guide. |
|
| Day 3 | Lao Cai to Sa Pa |
| You’ll arrive at approx 6.00 AM in Lao Cai and board
a local bus up to Sa Pa. It’s a lovely trip so be sure to have
plenty of film in your camera. After arriving at the hotel (approx 8.00 AM),
you’ll have a great brekkie while the staff arranges a room with a view for you
& by the way, every room has a view not just some of them !!! Afterwards you can go for a look around Sa Pa town. The main bulk of tourists won’t arrive until Saturday so for most of the time you’ll be on your own in this lovely town. In the afternoon (approx. 1.00 PM), one of our H’mong friends will take you for a walk to Cat Cat falls which was once an old Franco Hydro-Electric installation. By the way, you may want to take your swimsuit with you for this one. The evening is free, but if you ask our staff at the hotel they'll fill you in on what to do and where to go. (O/night in Sa Pa) |
|
| Day 4 | Sa Pa |
| You’ll have an early start (departure time from the hotel is
approx 8.30 AM) with a good brekkie and then you’re off for a
spectacular day in the countryside. You’ll be on your own (well, just
yourselves and your H’mong friend) and you’ll get to meet and visit the
homes of some Black H’mong, Giay, Xa Pho and possibly some Red Dao. You
may have a picnic lunch or, depending on the season, have lunch in the
home of an H’mong family along the way. If you don’t wish to walk back to Sa Pa, take a motorcycle taxi (“xe om”) back up to Sa Pa. It's about $2 USD Per Person for the motorcycle or we can arrange a car for about $5 USD P/pers. On Saturday nights you’ll get to see the famous Cho Tinh (love market) where the hill tribe people come to meet and maybe find some romance if they’re lucky. It’s really very charming and quite unforgettable. (O/night in Sa Pa) |
|
| Day 5 | Sa Pa to Bac Ha (or 1 of the other markets) |
| You’ll have another early start for the drive to the Sunday markets.
Please be aware that you won’t
be returning to the hotel up in Sa Pa so you’ll need to pack your bags, settle your bill
(for any extra meals, drinks etc) have brekkie and be ready to leave by
no later than 6.30 AM. The market is a bit wild & you’ll see people on horseback, strange things to eat, people meeting up with old friends & there’s lots of interesting handicrafts to buy. The famous Viet Cong black pyjamas are a great buy, as are lots of hand-made products made by the various minority groups. You’ll see lots of tribal people including Lo Lo, Giay, Flower H’mong, Nung, Tay as well as the Black H’mong. In Vietnam, there are over 54 minority groups, and the various “Ethnic Minority” markets are a great example of their lives and interaction with each other. In the afternoon, you’ll drive back to Lao Cai to board the night train to Ha Noi. You’ll usually have a bit of time in Lao Cai for dinner before boarding the train back to Ha Noi. (O/night on the train) Please Note: To visit the famous Sunday Market at Bac Ha we'll have to organise your tour for you to be in Bac Ha on the Sunday which is normally quite simple as we can swap the days around to suit if necessary. It's worth noting however that there are other “Ethnic Minority” markets that you can see on Sat, Sun & Tues too. They're bit smaller in size but just as interesting & well worth considering for those of you who like to get "off the tourist track". |
|
| Day 6 | Arrive in Ha Noi from Lao Cai |
| You’ll arrive in Ha Noi at approx
5.30 AM and you’ll be a bit
sleepy so one of our guides will be waiting at the station to meet you &
take you back to
your hotel. The Old Quarter of Ha Noi is very interesting & best known for its famous “36 Streets”. In previous times, each street sold the one kind of produce and/or product. Streets such as Hang Ma (paper products used in the offerings on every home altar), Thuoc Bac (herbal medicines) and Hang Bac (silver) street, are still alive and well. These days the Old Quarter of Ha Noi is one of the best places to shop for materials such as silks, lacquer ware and handicrafts. My most recent purchase of hand embroidered bed linen was just such a great buy ! (O/night in Ha Noi) |
|
| Day 7 | Ha Long Bay & Cat Ba Island Tour (3 days) |
| In the morning you’ll be picked up at your hotel by your guide and will go on our air-con bus
to Ha Long Bay. You’ll need to be ready to depart from your hotel by 8.45
AM.
After lunch in a great restaurant you’ll board our sailing boat & head out into the bay. Our guide will take you through one of the caves in the bay & we’re sure you’ll be most impressed !Later on in the afternoon the Captain will drop anchor & then you can go swimming in one of the little coves. If you’d like to try some kayaking, we can drop you off (& come back to get you too) at a spot in the bay that hires them for approx $5 per hour. Our rooms are very well appointed & all (either twin share or double) have private en-suite bathrooms with Euro style toilets (the starting blocks just don't get a start with us), cotton bedding & are air conditioned. There’s also a large & very lovely dining & living area for you to relax in as well with a great sound & DVD system as well. There's beer, wine, soft drinks, tea & coffee available on the boat too. (O/night on our boat in Ha Long Bay) |
|
| Day 8 | Ha Long Bay to Cat Ba Island |
| Our guests are often up at sunrise to go for another swim before heading over to Cat Ba Island.
After checking into your hotel, you’ll
head off on our mini-bus to a small village. You’ll go by a small boat along some canals (like the ones in the Me Kong) through a mangrove forest and arrive at some beautiful caves that are rarely visited. After the caves, you’ll go down to board our other boat (we’ve got a small fleet of them !) then go over to Cat Dua (monkey island) just near Cat Ba. There’s lots of monkeys too, so watch your bananas! You’ll arrive back in Cat Ba at about 5.00 PM where you’ll have time to freshen up before going out to discover some of the great seafood restaurants on the island. For dinner you might like to try the Green Mango which is easily the best place on the island. (O/night on Cat Ba Island) Please note that during the warmer months (March to Nov) we visit Monkey Island and in the colder months (Dec to Feb) we do a light trek & lunch in a local village on Cat Ba Island. |
|
| Day 9 | Ha Long to Ha Noi |
| In the morning, you’ll have a great breakfast just around the corner from the hotel & you'll have time for a swim before heading back to Ha Long city for lunch & then back to Ha Noi. You’ll arrive at our café at approx 5.30 PM. (O/night in Ha Noi) | |
| Day 10 | Handicraft Village Tour |
| In the morning (at approx 9.00 AM) you’ll visit the Pottery & then the Silk villages. With lunch along the way, you’ll go onto the Conical Hat & Hand Embroidery villages. It’s a great trip and you’ll be able to see some of Vietnam’s oldest traditional skills at work. (O/night in Ha Noi) | |
| Day 11 | Hue |
| You’ll fly
to Hue today & your flight time will depend
on the seasons & availability. From Hue airport we'll take you to
your hotel to check in & your guide will take you to have lunch at a famous Hue style, vegetarian restaurant. The food is really something else & is prepared in the style that the
Buddhist monks enjoy & have passed down to their followers over the years.
In the early afternoon, you’ll go for a boat cruise along the Perfume River dinner on the boat is a great way to finish off the day. The Minh Mang tomb (resting place of Emperor Minh Mang) is accessible by river and you can visit it whilst on the boat cruise. The entrance fees to some of the sites are about $4 USD & well worth it as all the monies are invested back into renovating the structures. Before having dinner on the boat, you may be able to visit the Thien Mu Pagoda where, sadly, the first of many Buddhist monks self immolated to protest against the cruel regime installed by the allies to lord over Southern Vietnam. (O/night in Hue) |
|
| Day 12 | Hue |
| You’ll have an early brekkie before your off to visit the Old Capital, the Forbidden Purple City, the 9 Holy Cannons and the Royal Citadel in Hue. We always have other options like a trip to the beach, which is approx 12 Km's from the centre of Hue. On the way back, we’ll stop to see where Uncle Ho’s parents lived. There’s also the old fort by the ocean that was used by general Le Si to spot the French when they first invaded Vietnam in 1885. The mineral spring baths, which have that sulpha smell but you’ll get used to, is a beautiful spot set in the ancient Hue style houses surrounded by bonsai gardens. The afternoon we’ll leave open or you may like to do a bit of shopping or café hopping. Our guide well recommend a couple of good restaurants for dinner. (O/night in Hue) |

| Day 13 | Hue to Hoi An |
|
After a nice brekkie, you’ll need to leave Hue by about 8.30 AM and we’ll head down to
Lang Co beach for a swim & lunch before heading to Hoi An. You’ll go over the Hai Van pass, on to Da Nang & then to Hoi An. You’ll arrive in Hoi An in the late afternoon. Hoi An is often referred to as the honeymoon capital of Vietnam, as it’s very charming and located on the Cui river. There are a number of old houses to visit in this historic little trading port. The architecture is a mixture of Japanese, Chinese, French and Vietnamese. A strange mix but beautiful none the less. Don’t forget to pop into any one of the dozens of tailor shops to get them started on all your new outfits ! (O/night in Hoi An) |
|
| Day 14 | Hoi An |
|
Today is a free day to enjoy the fabulous Hoi An town. You can do some shopping, relax at the beach or visit some of the famous old houses and other picturesque sites that have loads of history attached to them. Try the Tan Ky House, the Fu Kien Assembly Hall, the temples, the churches and the Japanese Covered Bridge. A trip down the river at dusk is just lovely and … well there’s just not enough space here to tell you all about it, but our guides will give you all the details and we’re sure you’ll have a great time. If you’ve ordered some new clobber, you’ll have time for a final fitting in the afternoon and then in the evening you’ll be able to collect your new clothes from the tailors. (O/night in Hoi An) |
|
| Day 15 | Hoi An |
| You can have either a relaxing day in Hoi An or a trip by boat to Cua Dai Beach. This will cost you about $7 USD per person. It takes approx. 3 hours by boat along the beautiful Thu Bon River to get to Cua Dai Beach. When you get there, you can go for an ocean swim then relax back into a comfy deck chair. We think you’ll love it. In the evening you may like to try the Chicken rice for dinner followed by a drink at the Tam Tam restaurant. (O/night in Hoi An) | |
| Day 16 | Hoi An to Nha Trang |
|
You’ll leave Hoi An town & then drive along one of the prettiest stretches of road to Da Nang. From Da Nang you’ll fly to Nha Trang where you’ll check into your hotel
& please note that your departure & arrival times
will depend on the seasons
but your guide will let you know well in advance. After arriving in Nha Trang, you may like to visit the very beautiful Cathedral, the Long Son Pagoda or the Oceanographic Institute. You’ll have time for swim either at the beach or at your hotel. In the evening, you can try one of the many great restaurants before heading out for a drink in one of many great nightspots in Nha Trang. (O/night in Nha Trang) Note: Nha Trang is very popular for scuba diving so if that’s your thing then our mate Jeremy Stein will be able to arrange a great dive for you. |

| Day 17 | Nha Trang |
| Your driver will pick you up in the morning and take you to the Thap Ba Hot Spring Centre. We’re sure you’ll enjoy the hot mud baths & hot mineral spring baths & swimming pool. The complex offers massage and a very good restaurant where they serve a great lunch ! The evening is free. (O/night in Nha Trang) | |
| Day 18 | Nha Trang to HCM City |
| In the morning/afternoon (it depends on the season as to what time your flight departs) you’ll fly to HCM City. Upon arrival, you’ll settle into your hotel which is usually located in District 1 of HCM City. The night market (Ben Thanh) has some great little “on the street” restaurants that are cheap but very good. (O/night in HCM City) | |
| Day 19 | HCM City |
| After breakfast, and usually starting at around 9.00 AM, your guide will take you for a look around town.
You’ll be able to visit all the famous sites such as the War Remnants Museum, Re-Unification Palace and,
after lunch, the original French colonial-style post office & the Notre Dame Cathedral.
For dinner, you may
like to try one of the local Indian community restaurants, they’re particularly good. HCM City is a very big bustling city and with approx. 8 million people and there’s always lots to do. (O/night in HCM City) |
|
| Day 20 | Me Kong Delta Tour |
|
You’ll need to have had brekkie & be ready to leave at approx 7.00 AM for your tour today. You’ll start by driving to Cai Be where you’ll meet your boat and then go to see the floating market where the vendors have all kinds of weird & wonderful things that they’re
keen to sell you.
You might like to get your guide to do your purchasing for you so that you get the best price. From the floating market you’ll go by boat along the tiny canals where during the war years they were a stronghold for the Southern Vietnamese (Giai Phong Quan/NLF or the Viet Cong as the Americans called them) in their fight against the allies for independence. These days however you’ll be able to sample some of the local tropical fruits & see how the locals live, work & play ! We’ll have bicycles for you to use & you’ll be able to visit some of the local Handi makers & even make a few purchases if you wish. Afterwards you’re off to Vinh Long city where you can see the markets & or just wander around as you wish. Before heading back to HCM City you’ll have one last stop at the Bonsai gardens which are just beautiful. You'll return to HCM city at approx. 7.00 PM. (O/night in HCM City) |
|
| Day 21 | Cu Chi Tunnels Day Tour |
|
You’ll need to have had brekkie & be ready to leave at approx
8.00 AM from your
hotel. We'll head out of HCM City by car and you'll see the
outer suburbs and then the country side of the South and onto the
famous Cu Chi Tunnels.
After lunch, you’ll go to the famous Cu Chi Tunnels - a tunnel network of over 200
Kms built by the Vietnamese during the war. The
head quarters of the resistance movement were
cleverly built under an American military base
! You’ll return to HCM city and after a long day you may like to try one of the great foot massage centres near your hotel. It might be just the trick ! To finish off your tour we suggest that you have dinner on board one of the floating restaurants that sail along the Sai Gon River. Great food, a cool breeze & a view of Sai Gon from the river by night are just great. (O/night in HCM City) |
|
| Day 22 | HCM City to Home |
| Your guide will take you to the Airport to meet your flight home. |

Our Current 2009 Prices (or now for some good news) |
|||||
|
|||||
|
Extra, extra read all about it ! (and some bad news) You know those current affairs shows where the reporters are chasing the villains & rogues down the lane & shoving their microphones into the places that are the most uncomfortable, well we hope it won't be long until they start running down some of the shonks in the travel caper. There's a rotten new caper by many of our competitors to get extra & rather large payments out of you on top of your original starting price & they're calling it an "in country" payment. Payment for what & why can't you pay it in your own country where you bought the tour ??? Other mobs are claiming to collect money from you to pay your tips for you (yeah as if) & others are just in your face, give us a lots of extra money, didn't you see it in the fine print, kinds of outfits. To top it off, they're demanding it in, of course, USD cash which means that you'll have to buy USD at the most expensive rate possible so you can had it over when you arrive in Viet Nam. They won't accept anything else except perhaps 1 or more of your gold fillings but it's undoubtedly extra for the extraction & I'd be very suss regarding the anaesthetic. Yet another scam these days is the compulsory tips per day caper. Recently, an Aussie couple was forced to pay nearly $200 each, on top of the quoted tour price for daily tips to the guide & driver who didn't bat an eyelid or even say thanks. Their attitude is understandable really because they weren't actually getting much of a share of the so called tips !!! Check the Included & Not included sections of any itinerary you might be considering. You'll see on most of our competitors itineraries that "tips to the guide & driver" are in the not included section. Please check EXACTLY how much these will be & get it in writing before you book. As mentioned elsewhere on our site, we still call a spade a shovel & so should we, it's the least can do for people who trust us with their holiday plans. Our prices are excluding air fares to and from Vietnam, your visas & travel insurance. We specialise in tours to Vietnam & we can modify or change the above tour if you wish & get back to you with a firm price usually in just a few days. |

| Accommodation Standards on our tours | |||||
|
People, understandably, ask us how many stars are the hotels that we use in Viet Nam. The truth is that the whole 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 star rave is very open to interpretation & in fact since that mob in the middle east claimed that their hotel is a "7" star hotel, it's unfortunately made the whole rating thing a bit of a joke. So exactly what is it that get's your property from 1 to 3 or 4 to 6 or 5 to 7 stars we'd like to know ??? If my hotel used to be a 2 star & I throw in an umbrella on the patio, a cheap old DVD player, a small bath & join an employer group ........... how many stars can I be then ? In Viet Nam, as well as everywhere else in the world, the Vietnamese have their own hotel rating system. The Aussies have theirs, the Americans have theirs and basically the rest of the world had a similar kind of rating system. BUT, in the middle east they have a different kind of logic to the rest of the world & their hotel rating system goes up to "7" ??? Sounds just like the logic they use to set their oil prices !!!!! You know the old "the oils running out so the price has to go up to $150 a barrel" (July/August 08) ??? Funny thing is that as soon as we all started being conservative with our oil use the price went down (Nov 08) to $50 a barrel ??? What happened did they find more oil all of a sudden or what ??? Thanks to the logic from the middle eastern hotel groups we reckon the whole hotel rating thing has become a joke & have decided instead, to, as accurately as possible, describe in detail the hotels we use. We've also included pictures of some of the hotels we use to assist our guests in choosing what's right for them. So here goes ...... Our Standard accommodation is usually in a smaller hotel. It includes good sized, clean, comfortable rooms with twin share or double rooms, a private bathroom with European toilet, remote control, reverse cycle air conditioning, TV, Telephone access and laundry facilities. Our Superior accommodation is usually in a newer, more modern & bigger hotel. Again it includes clean, comfortable, larger, twin share or double rooms, en suite bathroom with European toilet & bath, satellite TV, remote control, reverse cycle air conditioning, IDD telephone, Wi Fi or in room cable internet facilities & in most cases a swimming pool. Usually the superior accom has a buffet style breakfast as well. Our Deluxe accommodation is the best standard available in Viet Nam. Hotel groups like the Hilton, Novatel, Sheraton & Intercontinental are in Viet Nam nowadays & the our deluxe tour accommodation is of that international standard. It includes big, clean, very comfortable, twin share or double rooms, en suite bathroom with European toilet & bath, satellite TV, remote control, reverse cycle air conditioning, IDD telephone, Wi Fi or in room cable internet facilities, swimming & spa pools as well as 24 hour room service. Full business centre facilities, spa, sauna & gymnasium are usually available. A buffet style breakfast is the norm & in the deluxe package the hotels have dry cleaning as well as the normal laundry service. |

Hotels (click to see some of the lovely hotels we use) |
|
As Vietnamese women say, "my husband is the boss, but I’m his supervisor". Well this is certainly how we operate and I think most women worldwide would agree. I always hear that line about “you only sleep in your hotel so it’s not that important”. Well, Mado didn't agree & reckons that when she's on holidays it’s very important to have hotel accommodation that offers a decent nights sleep and (especially in hot, tropical climates) a pool is always an added bonus. We regularly go from Ha Noi down to HCM City to personally to check not just our current hotels but also to inspect new places for our customers to put their feet up in after a long day’s trekking & sight seeing. Depending on which tour you take, the accommodation standards along the coast of Vietnam will be similar to the standard or superior accommodation as described above. The only exceptions can be on some of the tours which go to the more remote areas of Vietnam like, Sa Pa, Bac Ma National Park & Cat Ba Island, etc. The rural areas can often have more basic facilities. Any queries regarding this are most welcome. |
